I shot this during a road trip on the US West Coast. It features beautiful landscapes from Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, the Yuha Desert and San Diego. When I was in transit, it felt like I had an eternity ahead of me. As soon as I finished, the whole experience was just a fleeting memory. I hope you enjoy what I saw in this little microsleep.

Drop some acid while you're at it.

All footage was shot on a Canon 7D. Timelapses were created with stills taken at timed intervals. This is my first batch of attempts at timelapses, and still need to school up my technique. But it taught me several things: patience; how to pack a bag with enough food to munch on and books to read; or how to stash your camera somewhere it won't be disturbed so you can go off and do your own thing :)

I threw in some Riders On The Storm by The Doors (and a little bite of Elvis' Viva Las Vegas).

R/GA was commissioned by Nike to create an immersive online experience to showcase the new Pro Combat uniforms created for classic "Rivalry" college football teams. We created a designed landscape through which users could explore different Rivalry teams and stadiums, watch themed inspiration videos and explore each team's new uniform designs and technologies.

Produced at R/GA

Client Team:
Jon Jones (Producer)
Jonathan Ayers, Evinn Quinn (Visual and ID)

Digital Studio Production Team:
Producer: Guy Helson
Production Manager: Gerta Xhelo
Creative Lead, Direction & Design: Wing Luo, Kirill Yeretsky, Robertino Zambrano
Lead Animator: Chad Yapyapan
CG Artists (Modelling, Lighting and Texturing): Thomas Parrinello, Cristina Kuong, Orges Kokoshari, Catherine Nguyen
Editing: Chad Yapyapan, Robertino Zambrano
Compositing: Wing Luo, Cristina Kuong, Robertino Zambrano
Sound Design: Mike Frank
CG Supervisor: Mark Voelpel

Process
We spent a lot of time designing and building the environmental landscape as well as creating the "Inspiration" videos which we created for a selection of key teams (Oregon, Boise State and LSU). The original plan was to make a unique sequence for each team, but, like many things in the industry, we had to cull and trim the concept to fit an ever-shrinking schedule.

The super-talented Wing Luo along with Kirill Yeretsky and I spent some time doing stylistic explorations for the the look and feel of the "map environment" and the stylised stadium settings. Wing and I created style frames off some basic Maya renders. Once the look was approved by the client, we rolled out everything in Maya, including all the camera work, environment build, and animated stadium builds, with some final compositing touches in After Effects.

<img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/map_colourtest_905.jpg" border="0" width="905" height="639" width_o="1000" height_o="707" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/map_colourtest_o.jpg" align="left" />
Early concept sketch for "map world".

<img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/us_map_905.jpg" border="0" width="905" height="673" width_o="1754" height_o="1306" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/us_map_o.jpg" align="left" />
Further developed with a 3D rendered asset.

<img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/usmap_905.png" border="0" width="905" height="507" width_o="1770" height_o="993" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/usmap_o.png" align="left" />
A more refined style frame for the "map world". Now we've added the 3D stadiums which were prepared by Cristina. This frame acted as the home page interface from which the user could choose to explore the different teams and uniforms.

<img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/stadium_outside_v3_blackwhite_905.jpg" border="0" width="905" height="509" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/stadium_outside_v3_blackwhite_o.jpg" align="left" />
A style frame exploring closeups of the stadiums environments. We opted for a more abstracted representation of the actual environments.

Early playblast by Chad Yapyapan testing camera work and animation for the stadium build.

The Inspiration videos were built on a similarly hasty schedule – receiving the final uniform designs only a week before launch, we decided to create the 3D athlete's using 100% 3D projection mapping in Maya. We were also able to get some leeway from the client and create a more cerebral and experimental edit, opening up some great opportunities for sound design.

<img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/Screen shot 2011-12-06 at 7.12.28 PM.png" border="0" width="269" height="517" width_o="269" height_o="517" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/Screen shot 2011-12-06 at 7.12.28 PM_o.png" align="left" />
This is the uniform asset that Nike supplied.

<img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/Screen shot 2011-12-06 at 7.09.51 PM_905.png" border="0" width="905" height="510" width_o="1107" height_o="625" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/Screen shot 2011-12-06 at 7.09.51 PM_o.png" align="left" />
3D mesh on which we projected the athletes' images.

<img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/Screen shot 2011-12-06 at 7.14.12 PM.png" border="0" width="384" height="494" width_o="384" height_o="494" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/2411304/Screen shot 2011-12-06 at 7.14.12 PM_o.png" align="left" />
The final result, after compositing.

As usual, Mike Frank whipped up some audio voodoo and created some riveting sound design to make the pieces work as a whole.

Pablo Gomez on the creative tech side was able to assemble the whole experience and get it looking slick in the end.

This work was created for Zain, the largest mobile service provider in the Middle East. These animations were created for ambient retail video walls in Zain's flagship store in Bahrain. We created an animated branded motif using unique and recognizable patterns from traditional Islamic art throughout the body of work, which posed interesting challenges for the animators to work with. We collaborated closely with the team in R/GA's London offices on this project.

Social media has engulfed our world. We are at the mercy of our friends' incessant tweeting, whoreish Foursquare checkins and self-righteous status updates. There is a place where these creatures can burn together in unholy and unbridled interconnectivity.

Introducing Social Media Hell, a mobile site by R/GA that allows users to unlock the seven levels of hell based on Dante’s Inferno, through tweets and foursquare check-ins. It launched at SXSW Interactive, where players confess their sins by checking into designated locales or selling their souls through twitter posts. A leader board took form, with the top player of SXSW becoming Mayor of Hell.

Cannes 2011 (Bronze Cyber Lion)
Congrats to the whole team at R/GA that worked together on this.
Role: Art Direction, Visual Design, Illustration

Artwork

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Lust_web_905.jpg" border="0" width="750" height="1044" width_o="750" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Lust_web_o.jpg" align="left" />
Lust. This luscious cowgirl embodied all things lusted after by those attending SXSW Interactive. If you tweeted about that new iPad you've been drooling over, the chances are that this all-seeing lusty demon already has your soul.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Debauchery_web_905.jpg" border="0" width="750" height="1044" width_o="750" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Debauchery_web_o.jpg" align="left" />
Debauchery. The indulgent demon of excess was the icon for all things debaucherous at Austin. Checked into a bar on Foursquare? Tweeted about last night's big bender? Know well, that you are playing in His house, my friend.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Gluttony_web_905.jpg" border="0" width="750" height="1044" width_o="750" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Gluttony_web_o.jpg" align="left" />
Gluttony. Where do our gluttonous demons gather? He devours one, He devours all. His lips are probably already wrapped around your soul (so long as you keep checking into those BBQ joints).

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Greed_web_905.jpg" border="0" width="750" height="1044" width_o="750" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Greed_web_o.jpg" align="left" />
Greed.This vociferous vixen vexes vain souls amassing amorous attention among a million mustered memes mangling for fame, fortune and good old fashioned-freaky times. Mad tweeters want the attention of the world all unto themselves, and She is their Lady.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Idolatry_web_905.jpg" border="0" width="750" height="1044" width_o="750" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Idolatry_web_o.jpg" align="left" />
Idolatry. Praise thee O Texas Longhorn. Celebrity sightings call for a sacrificial offering to Austin's Revered Golden Calf. Hut hut hut.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Wrath_web_905.jpg" border="0" width="750" height="1044" width_o="750" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Wrath_web_o.jpg" align="left" />
Wrath. He is all hateful tweets manifest.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Vanity_web_905.jpg" border="0" width="750" height="1044" width_o="750" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Vanity_web_o.jpg" align="left" />
Vanity. He sees you sculpt your tweets and status updates with artistry of conjuror.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Treachery_web_905.jpg" border="0" width="750" height="1044" width_o="750" height_o="1044" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/29475/1711091/Treachery_web_o.jpg" align="left" />
Treachery. King of the Castle. Lord of the Manor. The Mayor of Hell greets those most engulfed by the flames of Social Media Hell.

And here's our lovely case study video (oh don't you just love case studies!)

I was tasked with helping shape the overall visual direction of the mobile site. Each "Level of Hell" was embodied by demonic soothsayers, hailing from a world where the inhabitants of Dante's Inferno and Texan stereotypes collide.

I created early mood boards and visual directions for the mobile site, which included early interface concepts. The most entertaining part was developing and illustrating all the characters for the experience. Artwork was created initially with pencil on paper, while finishing was done digitally in Photoshop.

The developing team created a system whereby Foursquare and Twitter were scraped for relevant data to generate the site's content.
